I WANTED TO BE SPECIAL…

I wanted to be special.

I wanted to be different.

To be more than.

To stand out from the crowd.

I wanted to be that incredible success story.

The one that people read and thought “wow, that’s amazing.

She’s so inspirational.

If she can do it, maybe I can too”.

Call it vanity,

call it ego,

call it being completely full of myself…

but I didn’t want to be ordinary.

Ordinary wasn’t enough for me.

I was afraid of being ordinary.

In truth?

I was afraid that I WAS ordinary.

And it was as though I needed to prove otherwise.

That when I had my “blow it out of the water, 0-6 figures in 30 seconds flat, holy shit, where did she come from” story… THEN I would know I was special.

So what do you do when you pin all your hopes,

your very identity and sense of worth,

on that outcome…

and that outcome doesn’t unfold?

And you stare headfirst into that fear

That maybe I’m NOT all that special.

Maybe I AM ordinary.

But sometimes, we neglect the power of the ordinary.

We want so badly to be at the top of the tower,

that laying each one of those building blocks that would get us there seems tedious and mundane.

List building… ugghh… I just want to be THERE already

Writing blogs and making videos… ugghh… I just want to be THERE already

Getting runs on the board with clients… ugghh… I just want to be THERE already.

The process feel too slow,

too arduous,

too ordinary.

And when you don’t want to BE ordinary,

you don’t want to DO ordinary.

You want to do big,

you want to do grand,

you want to explode in a blaze of fireworks that carry you straight to the top of that tower.

So you sit at the bottom trying furiously to light that fuse.

*flick, flick, flick*

Instead of picking up that building block and putting it firmly in place.

And you return again tomorrow and keep trying to get that fuse burning.

*flick, flick, flick*

Instead of picking up another building block and putting it firmly in place.

Because NO, that’s not for you,

that whole gradual thing.

Gradual is boring.

Anyone can do gradual.

And you’re not just anyone

*flick, flick, flick*

But gradual gets the job done.

Gradual builds a strong foundation.

Gradual builds confidence.

Gradual allows you to learn.

To put the right systems in place.

To get the support you need along the way.

Gradual actually builds the tower.

While you’re still sitting at the bottom trying to light that fuse and take the shortcut to the top.

I used to think that gradual wasn’t ok

because it wasn’t big enough, fast enough, grand enough to be special.

And I wanted to be special.

But gradual IS special.

Because so few people are willing to actually build that way.

Fewer still are persistent enough to stay the course.

To keep laying those foundational blocks even when it feels like the tower may never materialise.

But have you ever seen a high rise tower go up?

They work on those foundations for what feels like months on end with little to nothing to show for it.

Then all of a sudden, the first floor appears, and the next and the next.

And you think “holy shit, where did that come from, it’s like it shot up overnight”.

Pretty extraordinary huh?

So you wanna be special?

You’ve got two options.

Sit at the bottom and flick away at the fuse.

Or grab a fucking building block and put it firmly into place.
