WHAT IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WTF YOUR MESSAGE IS????

I remember in the early days of my business, I would hear all the experts say that winning in business was simply a matter of finding your message.

If something wasn’t working, there would be a bit of a shrug of the shoulders and a flippant remark about how it was “probably a problem with the messaging”.

One coach in particular used to ask the question… “what is the message you want to shake the world with?”

And while I understood that this whole messaging piece was pretty important, I found those comments infuriating.

Because all I could think to myself was “well yeah that’s great… but what if I don’t know WTF my message is????”

And maybe you feel the same way.

So I want to take the pressure off a little and break down this whole messaging thing so you can start to figure out what it’s all about… and what YOUR message might be.

First of all…

The clouds don’t need to part and have Angels sing upon you

One thing that tripped me up for the longest time was feeling like I needed to have this huge earth-shattering message. This ground-breaking, revolutionary concept that would rock the world to it’s very core.

Because I just wanted to help people with their business.

And yes, there were underlying motivations of wanting to make a difference and empower women and yada, yada, yada…. But if I’m being totally honest… I didn’t start my business to serve some almighty, higher purpose or to change the world.

I started my business to change MY world. To create a better life for my family. To have the freedom to buy the punnet of fresh blueberries AND a couple of avocados at the supermarket without feeling like I was being all extravagant.

So when the gurus came around banging their “What’s your message?” drums, I couldn’t help but feel anything I would come up with either be disingenuous… or self-indulgent and therefore “empty”.

But what I didn’t realise at the time… was that there’s a clear distinction between your MESSAGE… and your MISSION.

Your mission is what drives your business. What makes you get up in the morning. What keeps you putting one foot in front of the other when things get tough.
And maybe for you… your mission IS to make a huge impact on the world.
Or maybe it’s simply to be able to buy the avocados regardless of whether there’s a “2 for 1 special” on.

Either end of that spectrum (and everywhere in between) is a totally valid mission.

So don’t feel like you need to wait for the clouds to part and the Angels to sign down upon you before you can share your message.

So what IS your Message then?

I define your message as the way you communicate WHO you are, WHAT you offer, and WHY people should care.

And GOOD messaging is about doing so in a way that cuts through all the noise and bullshit online and gets the RIGHT people to sit up and pay attention… and most importantly COMPEL them to take action.

Your messaging is the words you write, the videos you create, the way you introduce yourself at a networking event, the way you educate your audience on your zone of genius, the way you answer questions in a FB group, the way you describe your offer on a sales call… you get the idea here right?

How do you start to shape your message?

If you feel like your messaging is a little blurry in your mind and you’re not sure how to start communicating your brilliance in a way that will make people care… here’s a few questions to start with…
I’ve pre-filled these questions with some of my OWN answers to help get you on the right track.

What do you do?
I’m an online business and messaging strategist

Who does that help?
Women in online service based businesses who are awesome at what they do, but just not getting the traction they want (and deserve) online.

What problems are those people struggling with (that your service can help them to solve)?
They struggle with how to articulate what they do in a compelling way. They’re putting so much time and effort into creating content and posting here, there and everywhere, but it’s not translating into sales. They keep searching for the next best strategy thinking that surely THAT will make the difference… but really… unless they can figure out how to create irresistible offers and learn how to talk about them using juicy and compelling language… any strategy they try will still fall flat.

What do those people really wish they could experience instead (that your service can help them to achieve)?
They wish they could stop wasting time online trying to figure out what they should be doing and just simply and confidently describe what they do in a way that makes their dream clients say “OMG that’s exactly what I need”.

What is the ultimate outcome they will get from working with you?
They will be able to simplify what they’re doing online and focus ONLY on what’s going to get them results in the fastest way possible and those $5k and $10k months will become their new normal.

That is the perfect starting point to begin shaping your message. If you understand WHO it is you’re trying to reach, what they’re STRUGGLING WITH and what they really WANT INSTEAD… then you simply start to speak to that.

You start to answer the questions they have around their problem.
You start to share what they need to do to achieve their desires.
And
You start to demonstrate how YOUR service can be the bridge that takes them from where they are to where they want to be.
